When I first new (last year) about the worldwide Nutella Day celebration, it was too late to participate, but I promised myself to do it the following year.
Here I am my friends, keeping my (self) promises but most importantly, paying homage to a longtime , obscure love affair:Nutella.
Luckily for me, it didn't take me long to find what to do with this buttery hazelnut-chocolate spread that has taken over the world. Actually, the answer came to me naturally: Alfajores. Because what could be better than pair this amazing Italian invent with one of my favorite cookies?.
After all the best two best ways to eat Nutella are: 1) by spoonfuls (very dangerous, I know) and the 2) as in a tartine, with plain toasted bread. I just replaced the bread for a cookie.
Yes, I´m such a smart cookie :)
Alfajor, is a sandwich cookie style, traditionally filled with dulce de leche (Cow's milk jam). Both dulce de leche and alfajor are considered national treasures in Argentina.
I hope not to disappoint my many Argentinian and Sudas friends(from South America) with the little twist I made to this cherished recipe; but I think the Nutella addition instead of dulce de leche fits perfectly.
As you will see, alfajor dough is quite sweet and paired with dulce de leche sometimes is just too much. Au contraire, with Nutella filling the cookie becomes perfectly balanced, specially if you have the chance to fill it with my husband´s own Nutella a la pasion (Nutella with passion fruit) recipe which gives a little sourness that's so welcome.
I'll promise to steal the recipe for future post if, only if, you promise to be discrete. (2011 update: I did stole the recipe, so probably I will share it somehow....someday..)
Alfajores a la Nutella (Alfajores cookies filled with Nutella)
Yield: about 3 dozens
Recipe by my porteña friend Angela. Slightly adapted
Ingredients
100 gr soft butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg + 1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon brandy
1 cup of flour
1 cup cornstarch
1 pinch of salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
300 gr Nutella
50 gr fine grated unsweetened dried coconut
Sift together flour, cornstarch, salt and baking powder. Set aside.
Beat butter, add sugar and keep beating until light and fluffy. Add egg and yolk . Beat and add the liquids, mix well. Finally add the flour mixture, with a wooden spoon, mix to obtain a soft dough. Refrigerate overnight for best result or chill for 2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 130 Celsius degrees. On a floured work surface, roll out dough to desire thickness. Cut into rounds (traditional shape) or whatever shape you choose (I choose hearts thinking on Saint Valentine's Day proximity). Transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 minutes. Cookies must be just cooked but not browned. Let cookies to cool for other 10 m
inutes and after that spread a spoonful of Nutella or dulce de leche in one cookie and top it with another. Press together gently; roll them in coconut.I'm submitting this recipe as part of World Nutella Day 2009 an event created by Ms Adventures in Italy and Bleeding Espresso.

Beautiful cookies! They'd make a great little Valentine's present. It's hard to go wrong with Nutella, isn't it? Yours is the first bilingual blog I've seen. It must be time consuming to include two languages on all your posts, but I'm sure it reaches a much wider audience that way. Very nice blog!
