The first time I set my foot on this fishermen village I knew this place was special,
I also instantly felt this little corner of the world was ours.
Still is.
No matter what season, whenever we are in Provence chez les in laws*, we pay a visit to Petit Méjean. A tiny port hidden between the calanques that form the stunning Cote Bleue circuit; and more specifically part of la commune de Ensuès-La-Redonne .
There are many other calanques, cliffs and ports much prettier than this one, you might suggest. My answer is yes.
But none like our Méjean with its ponton where we love to lay around and soak up the sun while we day dream about owning our cabanon here.
One day.

how to get there
By train take the magnificent Blue Coast Train Line, from Marseille to Miramas (via Port de Bouc). You will get down in Ensues-La Redonne and from there you must walk about 15 minutes to get to Grand and Petit Mejean (wear comfty shoes). There is a local shuttle bus that connects these little ports 3 times a day.
By car drive north out of Marseille along the D5 via L´Estaque (another lovely port, where uncle Jacky, the papi of little M. is from) until you reached the sign posted turn off to Ensuès-La-Redonne, pass the main harbour and turn right and follow the road. Be extremely careful since this single track road is very narrow and steep. Also, parking is very limited and during summer the access by car to Grand and Petit Mèjean is only for locals.

Mange tout is a tiny little fish that is deep fried, a dish to be enjoyed alongside un verre de pastis ou rosé according to local tradition. This eatery is the only resto-snack to be found in this minuscule port and luckily is quite good. As expected fresh fish like daurade is a specialty.
what to do
Scuba diving (bring your own equipment kind of place. no instructors or rental. same goes for boats. bring your own boat...)
Randonée (trail walks), you know frenchies are cazy for trail walks, don´t you?. There are several trail walks that cover both Mèjeans, the more known are starting from Niolon or Carry le Rouet (also lovely ports).
Boulodrome only for locals (now you have a reason to practice your french and make friends with the boys..)
about the community
Grand and Petit Mejean is inhabitated by two types of people: fishermen that have live there for generations at their families´ humble cabanon or rich people who own gorgeous weekend villas in the hills. None of them appreciate the hoards of tourists, if you visit this blue gem I encourage you to respect their privacy and quiet lifestyle. If you do so, you might receive a welcoming approving smile and a bonjour, even perhaps, who knows, an invitation to get on their bateaux.

La primera vez que puse un pie en éste poblado de pescadores, supe que era especial,
también, instantáneamente sentí como ésta pequeña esquina del planeta nos pertenecía.
Todavía es igual.
No importa en qué temporada, pero cada que estamos en Provence chez les in laws*, le rendimos una visita a Petit Méjean. Un mini puerto escondido entre las calanques que forman la impresionante Cote Bleue; en específico la commune de Ensuès-La-Redonne .
Pero hay muchas más calanques y puertos más bonitos que éste, podrán decirme. Mi respuesta es, si, tienen razón.
Pero ninguno como nuestro Méjean con su ponton donde nos encanta recostarnos y tomar el sol mientras tenemos sueños guajiros de algún día no muy lejano, poseer un cabanon aquí.

como llegar
Por tren hay que tomar la magnífica línea de Blue Coast Train Line, que te lleva de Marseille a Miramas (via Port de Bouc). Hay que descender en la terminal de Ensues-La Redonne y de ahí caminar unos 15 minutes para finalmente llegar al destino: Grand y Petit Mèjean (ojo: usar zapato muy confortable). Hay una línea local de autobuses que conecta los 3 puertos, con 3 paradas al día
En carro hay que tomar la salida de Marsella dirección Norte por la D5 vía L´Estaque (otro lindísimo puerto, de donde el tío Jacky es) hasta llegar a una rotonda y seguir dirección de Ensuès-La-Redonne, pasar el puerto principal de Ensues, continuar por el pequeño camino hacia la derecha y seguir la señalizacion. Atención, hay que tener mucho cuidado ya que el camino es super estrecho, elevado y de un sólo carril; así que sin falta hay que respetar el semáforo. Otro pequeño inconveniente es que el parking es muy limitado y en verano el acceso al camino de Grand y Petit Mejean est sólo para uso de los locales.

Mange tout es un pequeño pescadito el cual es frito (como los charales en México) y que se disfruta con un verre de pastis ou rosé . Este sencillo restorante es la única opción para comer o matar el hambre en Petit Mèjean, y francamente no está tan mal. Como se espera, el pescado fresco de la region, como la daurade es la especialidad de la casa.

scuba diving (hay que traer su propio equipo, nada de rentals o instructores por acá).
Randonée (caminatas). ¿Si sabían que los frenchies son fous por las caminatas, no?. Bueno, pues hay varios caminos que cubren los dos Mèjeans, los más conocidos salen de Niolon o de Carry le Rouet (lindísimos puertos tambien).

acerca de la comunidad
Grand y Petit Mejean son habitados por dos tipos de gente: los pescadores locales quienes han vivido ahí toda su vida en sus humildes cabañas o los ricos y millonarios que tienen sus villas de fin de semana en las colinas. Algo tienen en común: no aprecian las manadas de turistas ruidosos, así que te sugiero si visitas nuestra gema azul, respetes la privacidad y el estilo de vida de los Mejeanenses. Si lo haces podrás ganarte una sutil sonrisa de bienvenida y aprobación acompañada de un bonjour, y quién sabe, tal vez una invitación a pasear en sus bateaux.
